Conservation
During the youthful years of the United States, the people and Government focused on expansion west, into the frontier, and into the wilderness. Factories were constructed, trees cut down, Animals slaughtered, all to pave the way to the future. Although there was no obvious issue at first, the problems of such violent expansion soon became apparent. As factory output increased, so did pollution. This pollution formed smog and often covered cities, as well as desecrating the surrounding wilderness. Once flourishing forests became sparse, and entire species of animal became endangered. The problem emerged most evidently with the near-extinction of the American Bison. Over the course of the 19th Century, over 50 Million Bison were slaughtered, leaving the Species in ruins, fleetingly becoming extinct. As this happened to Forests and creatures, people began to take notice.
One of the Conservationists who emerged is John Muir. Muir, a Scottish immigrant, founded Yosemite National Park in 1890, modeling it after Yellowstone. Later, he founded the Sierra club, which was formed for Mountain Lovers, as a antecedent to conservationist organizations. The Sierra Club successfully defended Yosemite from being reduced in size by half, and gained enough support to transfer control from the State Government, to the Federal Government.
The exploits of John Muir and other Progressive Conservationists has influenced the modern populace and government alike. Currently, there are 59 National Parks built to defend the Environment. The Conservation movement has erupted into an international initiative, largely inspired by the Progressive Era.
