Role of Women in Society
Women, who had been viewed in a lesser light than men for most of recorded history, achieved a new status level during the progressive era. Previously, women were expected to stay at home, raise children, gain honor through marriage, and cede all of their property to their husbands. During the progressive era, the purpose of women evolved, particularly for middle class women. Jobs began to open up to them, and many accepted the positions gladly. Department stores were a major influence in this, as women were perfectly suited to the new clerical positions that needed filling. Also, Higher class women gained access to higher forms of education. Some even graduated from universities and became Lawyers, Doctors, or Scientists.
The image of women changed, from a subordinate stay at home mother, to a young, athletic, educated woman who refused anything less than an equal marriage. Women took control of their own lives. This paved the way for many future advancements.
