Socialism
Socialism was a movement that was spurred on by the large amount of immigrants entering america in the late 1800's. Around this time Karl Marx had written The Communist Manifesto in Germany. German immigrants brought these ideals over to america with them, forming the Socialist Labor Party in 1876. By 1912, as seen in the picture above, the Socialist Labor Party had its own presidential candidate and a significant following. The following was mostly those of the lower/working class because of their promises to return the means of production to the working class, and their heavy support of labor unions. Because of this strong support from German immigrants and common workers, it posed a great opposition to declaring war on Germany in 1917.
